Retired soldier is hero of mall Ishop raid

A security guard held off four armed men who tried to rob Apple’s Ishop store in Guadalajara’s Centro Magno Mall Monday, October 21.

According to reports, the robbers entered the store just as it was closing at around 8:50 p.m. After threatening employees, they began to stuff merchandise into three large black bags.

Their plans were frustrated when a mall security guard realized what was happening, approached the store and began to fire his weapon at the intruders.

The gang returned fire and fled the store, wounding the guard.  They dumped the three bags full of computer gear and a handgun at the entrance of the mall as they scampered away on foot.

Police arrived at the scene almost immediately and quickly located a Voyager SUV parked nearby with bloodstains on the seat, in addition to two imitation handguns. They also detained a man in the process of changing his shirt, who appeared to have a gunshot wound. He is suspected of being one of the assailants. The remainder of the gang managed to escape.

The mall security guard, reported to be a retired soldier, age 59, was treated for his injuries and is in stable condition.
