Stray firework sends Zapopan Christmas tree up in flames

Flames engulfed the Christmas tree installed in Zapopan’s Plaza Americas Tuesday evening.  No one was injured in the blaze, but the tree was completely destroyed.

pg1bFirefighters immediately speculated that the incident was the result of fireworks being set off in the area. This was later confirmed by Zapopan Mayor Pablo Lemus, who said the fire was caused by a rocket fired by individuals paying tribute to the Virgin of Zapopan, the revered statue that is housed in the plaza’s Basilica (cathedral). Lemus emphasized that the culprits were “partying,” in addition to venerating the religious icon.

The tree, which had an estimated valued of one million pesos, was erected by a soft drinks company. Lemus said the firm will initiate legal proceedings against those responsible for the blaze.

Instead of erecting a new tree, which might take up to ten days, Lemus said the local business chamber may install a “villa navideña” (Christmas scene) in the plaza, complete with a Santa Claus.

Lemus also confirmed that an ice rink will shortly be opening in the plaza for the holiday season.
