The Abastos wholesale market in Guadalajara has installed a disinfection tunnel through which everyone entering the facility is obliged to pass.

Market representative Martín Ramírez Falcón said the “ozone disinfection” process destroys viruses and bacteria.  Ozone (O3) is formed when oxygen molecules (O2) collide with oxygen atoms. Ramírez said masks and antibacterial gel are being distributed to all vendors on a regular basis.  Shoppers are requested not to come to the market in groups, he added.

While crowds have diminished in the Guadalajara city center, some Tapatios continue to ignore the pleas to stay indoors to limit coronavirus contagion.  As of last weekend, municipal police patrols started to monitor the zone, using loudspeakers to urge people enjoying the tranquil ambience not to congregate in groups and to go home. With many stores now closing for the next four weeks, authorities expect activity in the historic downtown area to slow down, although government offices and financial institutions will continue to operate as normal.
