GDL prepares cemetery for Covid-19 burials

Municipal workers are digging 700 additional grave sites at Guadalajara’s Panteón de Mezquitán cemetery as a backup in case the city experiences a sharp spike in Covid-19 fatalities, says Oscar Villalobos, chief of  municipal services.

pg4aThis means families of victims will be guaranteed a space for their bereaved relatives, the official says. In addition, Mezquitán’s crematorium has increased its capacity, and can handle 36 corpses a day. The Mezquitán cemetery is the largest in the metropolitan area.

Under federal guidelines for phase three of the health contingency, patients who have died as a result of Covid-19 should be buried or cremated within nine hours. Wakes are prohibited and all funeral home and cemetery staff must be equipped with the correct protective gear.
