‘Jalisco Without Hunger’ to step up distribution of basic supplies

Two weeks since the launch of Jalisco Sin Hambre, the private/state government initiative has distributed 12,000 despensas (bags of essentials) to families struggling to survive the economic collapse provoked by the Covid-19 lockdown.

While organizers are pleased with how the program is progressing, the Family Development Agency (DIF) call center set up to register needy recipients has been saturated with requests, way beyond original projections.

The program is now being stepped up thanks to increased donations, with the aim of handing out 25,000 parcels a week to the needy over the next three months. The program is also distributing ready-made meals to individuals living on the streets and in vulnerable situations.

Each despensa contains oatmeal, cereal, rice, cookies, pasta, dried milk, canned tuna, beans, lentils, soya, chili powder, vegetable oil, tinned corn, tomato puree, sugar and coffee – to a value of 650 pesos. Various other supplies, such as soap and rehydration drinks, may also be included.

DIF Jalisco has set up a call center to receive inquiries and register people needing assistance. Call 333-030-4636. The center is open from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 to 2 p.m.
