Eight inmates die as gangs wage war inside state prison

A confrontation between members of two drug cartels at Guadalajara’s Puente Grande penitentiary left eight inmates dead May 22.

pg5The face-off began during a soccer game, according to authorities.  Three of the inmates died from gunshot wounds, authorities reported. Nine inmates were injured, while five were arrested.

Reports indicated that the showdown was between members of Mexico’s two most powerful drug cartels: the Cártel de Sinaloa and the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación.

Several guards were detained as the state attorney general’s office began an investigation into how weapons were smuggled into the prison.

After the incident, authorities said they had seized two handguns and one explosive device.

Prison authorities denied they had relinquished control of the facility, dismissing suggestions that the cartels basically self-govern themselves.
