Anti-police and anti-government protests continued in Guadalajara last weekend in response to last month’s unexplained death of 30-year-old construction worker detained by Ixtlahuacan de Membrillos municipal officers for an alleged face mask violation.
The new protests demanding justice for Giovanni Lopez followed a violent demonstration that rocked the city center on Thursday, June 4, during which 28 people were arrested. All were released without charges a few days later, a move Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said would help “ease tensions.”
The fallout from the shocking revelation that Lopez died of a head injury shortly after being taken into police custody has presented an additional challenge for Alfaro, who for the past three months has focused all his efforts on guiding this state through the coronavirus emergency.
