Parts of city center sealed off
Guadalajara City Hall has cordoned off various public areas in the historic center to discourage people from “recreational” activities, says Mayor Ismael del Toro.
“We are trying to tell people this is not the time to be out for a walk, or sightseeing,” Del Toro said. Areas with restricted access include the Plaza Liberacion, Plaze de Armas, Rotunda of Illustrious Jaliscienses and the courtyard by the entrance to the Corona Market
Robbers target churchgoers
Armed robbers raided a service being held at a church located in the Bugambilias subdivision of Zapopan July 21, stripping parishioners of cellphones, wallets and purses. The four assailants also made off with a 2017 Toyota Tacoma belonging to a person attending the service.
Carbon tax proposed
The Jalisco governor has sent a proposal to the state legislature to enact a local carbon tax. Although the document lacks many details of how the measure will be drafted, it notes that funds raised from the tax will be earmarked for the Fondo Estatal de Protección al Ambiente (State Environment Fund).
