With the rainy season now in full swing, motorists – especially those in Guadalajara – should be aware of the hazards that sudden downpours can bring.
Here is a quick guide to some of the dangers you might confront on metro-area streets.
TUNNELS
Tunnels that run beneath major intersections are especially hazardous because they can fill up with rainwater at a rapid rate. Several unsuspecting motorists have died in the past after becoming trapped in rising water in a city tunnel.
TREES
The high winds that often accompany heavy rains cause an added danger of falling trees. This is particularly acute in Guadalajara where many streets and avenues are lined with tall, old and fragile trees. Avoid driving in heavy winds.
TRAFFIC LIGHTS
Intersections become hazardous when it rains because stoplights can often go out. Motorists should remember to drive defensively at crossroads.
MANHOLES
Manhole covers frequently become dislodged, leaving gaping holes in the streets. Sometimes these are impossible to see because of the surface water covering them. Drive slowly through currents of water.
The most important safety tip, if one can help it, is to avoid driving altogether when it is raining heavily.
