Student’s murder a probable hate crime, LGBT groups say

Jalisco authorities say they are treating the August 11 murder of an 24-year-old LGBTTI student as a possible hate crime, among other lines of investigation.

pg4aJonathan Santos, who studied at the University of Guadalajara (UdG) Jorge Matute Remus Polytechnic School, was shot in the head in the street after he left a party in Zapopan’s Balcones de la Cantera neighborhood on Tuesday night.

Jalisco Attorney General Octavio Solis said the preliminary investigation has not indicated that Santos left the party following any kind of conflict or confrontation. He had apparently asked for a ride home, but been dropped a few blocks from his house. His body was found at the corner of calles Piedra Lisa and Brilante.

Various LGBBTI collectives are insisting that the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) make the hate crime theory the focus of its investigation.
