Thumbs down for plaza de armas eyesore?

An unofficial unveiling took place this week in Guadalajara’s emblematic Plaza de Armas, which is wedged between the stately Metropolitan Cathedral and Jalisco Government Palace.

Wraps were removed to reveal one of the two entrances to the “Guadalajara Centro” station of the city’s third Tren Ligero (subway) line, which is scheduled to open later next month.

The immediate verdict was that the seven-meter-long industrial-looking metal structure – and its nearby elevator – were out of place in the picturesque Colonial square. Despite the incongruity, the structure does meet with the approval of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History, city officials confirmed.
