There were no crowds or fireworks at this year’s Grito ceremony in downtown Guadalajara but emotion was not completely absent.
The festivities centered on honoring front-line health sector workers who have bravely battled the coronavirus pandemic at great personal risk over the past six months.
Twenty-four representatives from various institutions were given the chance to witness the ceremony from an exclusive position below the balcony of the Palacio de Gobierno.
“We are flattered, honored to be here,” said Alicia Elizabeth Guzmán, an employee at the Hospital General de Occidente. According to the Jalisco Health Department, 873 health care workers have tested positive for Covid-19 in Jalisco since the start of the pandemic.
