Infection from Covid-19 didn’t scare off Tapatios eager to experience for the first time Guadalajara’s latest transportation jewel: the third line of the Tren Ligero (light train or subway).
On its first (half) day of full operation (Saturday, September 12), some 33,000 folks rode the line – free of charge in its initial week – that slices diagonally through the metro area from the northern periferico in Zapopan to the bus station in Tlaquepaque. Sunday’s numbers almost doubled that figure.
The US$1.5 billion line takes in the historic centers of Guadalajara, Zapopan and Tlaquepaque, and features 13 elevated and five underground stations.
Speed and comfort were the main characteristics praised by users trying out the train line. “We went from the Calzada Independencia to the new bus station in about ten minutes,” enthused a woman who makes the journey regularly. “On a bus that can take almost an hour.”
