Prominent downtown building in danger of collapse

As reports of a collapsed apartment building in Miami dominated the headlines, Guadalajara authorities this week evacuated a building in the city center that experts say could crumble in the event of an earthquake.

pg7aCivil Protection officers shuttered the five-story Edificio Plaza, the rather drab building bordering the central Plaza de Armas, located across from the Government Palace and next to the cathedral. It is home to the One Hotel, an office of the local Chamber of Commerce and 19 other offices, as well as 11 small stores at street level.

Engineers say the building had shown signs of damage in its basement prior to the start of work on the underground section of the third Tren Ligero (Light Train) line in 2016.
