A newborn baby abducted Wednesday afternoon from the Hospital General de Occidente in Zapopan was thankfully recovered the following day.
According to police reports, a woman dressed in surgical garb approached a mother who was receiving attention along with her newborn in the gynecology area, informing her she would be taking the baby back to the nursery. Believing the woman to be a hospital staff member, the mother agreed.It wasn’t until a short while later that the mother realized the woman had absconded with her baby.
Video surveillance cameras captured images of the abductor, who had placed the newborn in a shopping bag and calmly walked out of the public hospital.
Municipal and state police were quickly mobilized to scour the zone, an amber alert was issued and images of the abductor posted on multiple social media platforms. As investigations continued Thursday, the good news came through just before midday that the baby had been found abandoned outside an apartment block in Colonia Arcos Zapopan — fortunately safe and sound.
An internal investigation has been launched at the hospital to determine how security measures failed so alarmingly.
