Handicraft institute rescued & renovated

A near frenzy of media accompanied the reopening of the Casa de las Artesanias (House of Handicrafts) June 11, when Jalisco Governor Alfaro headed a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour marking major renovations valued at 18 million pesos ($US900,000).

There were various types of artisans present—doll makers, basket weavers and of course Jalisco’s renowned alfareros (potters)—when Alfaro and other dignitaries made their appearance at the approximately century-old structure near Parque Agua Azul not far from the historic center of Guadalajara. Formerly called Instituto de la Artesanía Jalisciense, it had long been known for the display and sale of a variety of typical, high quality Jalisco handicrafts in both traditional and innovative styles. But the pandemic, as well as the simple march of time, had left the collection and facility under-appreciated, resulting in a not-very-successful attempt to sell off its old holdings in 2021.
