OFJ season gets under way

The Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (OFJ) will see four guest conductors take the baton during an eight-program 2023 winter season, which kicks off with concerts at Guadalajara’s Teatro Degollado on Thursday, February 9 and Sunday, February 12.

pg3b copyOFJ Musical Director Jose Luis Castillo starts the season with a program comprising Johannes Brahms’ Tragic Overture, Op. 81, Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4, and Clara Wieck’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7, performed by soloist Daniela Liebman (see story left).

British conductor Catherine Larsen-Maguire joins the orchestra for program two on February 16 and 19 for Carl Nielsen’s Maskarade Overture; Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47; and Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme (“Enigma”), Op. 36.  Born in Manchester, England, she read music at Cambridge University and studied the bassoon at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at the Karajan Academy in Berlin, playing regularly in the Berlin Philharmonic during this time. Based in Berlin, where she was the principal bassoonist in the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin for ten years, she decided to concentrate exclusively on conducting in 2012.
