Popular downtown light festival extended to six nights

GDLuz, the annual sound and light spectacle held in downtown Guadalajara, will run for an additional two days this month, from Tuesday, February 14 to Sunday, February 19.

pg4The free of charge, multimedia event, which is spread out over a large portion of the Centro Historico, has become a popular attraction held in tandem with the celebration of Guadalajara’s birthday, which falls on February 14.

Instead of four days, as in previous editions, the 2023 GDLuz will run for six consecutive evenings, between 7:30 and 11:30 p.m. The two-kilometer walking route will feature more than 35 attractions, extending from the Cabañas Institute to Plaza Guadalajara, and taking in key sites such as the Catedral Metropolitana, Plaza de Armas, Rotonda de las y los Jaliscienses Ilustres, Plaza de la Liberación, Paseo Fundadores and Plaza Tapatía.  A 20-minute multimedia show, including digital projection mapping on the Teatro Degollado and fireworks, will run each night in the Plaza Liberación.  A special “serenade” to Guadalajara is scheduled the plaza on February 14 at 8:50 p.m.

Two-thirds of the GDLuz budget of 20.2 million pesos ($US1.1million) will come out of Guadalajara city hall coffers, and the remainder from the Jalisco state government.

This year, many events celebrating the 481st anniversary of the founding of Guadalajara will be taken to outlying neighborhoods of the municipality, city hall has announced. For example, the festival Queremos Jericalla!, showcasing the popular local desert made from milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and sugar, will not be held in the city center, but in Colonia Oblatos on February 15.
