Mattel to release 'Mariachi' Barbie

Timed to coincide with Mexican Independence Day, and with the U.S. Latino market in mind,  Mattel will release a “Mariachi Barbie” on September 15.

The doll will be dressed in a typical back charro outfit, and come with a range of accessories, including a sombrero, boots and a pink bow tie.

The new doll is part of the of Mattel’s extensive “Dolls of the World” collection that has included the previous release of a Cinco de Mayo doll in 2007 and a Mexico doll in 2012. Mattel received criticism for stereotyping after releasing its first Mexico doll, which included the detail of a Chihuahua dog tucked under her arm.
