Trump proposes border crossing tax to pay for wall

During a speech in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that he is considering charging a toll on cars crossing the border into the United States in order to pay for his border wall.

In this way, he asserts that Mexico will end up “paying for the wall,” a line he has consistently promoted ever since he decided to run for the presidency.

Thousands of Mexicans and dual citizens cross the border each day, many of whom work on the U.S. side.

Mexican government officials have repeatedly said this country will never fund a border wall.  President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador did not react to Trump’s announcement. Since taking office he has pointedly tried to avoid all conflict with his unpredictable U.S. counterpart.
