2022 US Midterms: September is the smartest month to vote from Mexico

The 2022 midterm elections in the United States are a lot closer when you’re a U.S. citizen voting from Mexico,  says Larry Pihl, local chair of the Vote From Abroad (VFA) program.

pg6bThat’s why VFA named September as Smart Voter Month, says Pihl. “Vote in September, and avoid problems—and maybe save yourself a lot of pesos.”

Here are the strongly recommended “smart deadlines”:

September 19 (to REQUEST your ballot).

September 30 (to SEND your ballot back).

Why are these dates so smart?  Because they give you realistic time frames from Mexico to: 1) Request your ballot before they are emailed out by (approximately) September 24.  2) Send your ballot back using inexpensive U.S. first class mail so it arrives in time. 3) Fix your ballot if there’s an issue, which is more likely in this election given there are new voting rules in almost 20 states.

Pihl also notes that voting from Mexico is an easy, two-step process:

First, request your ballot at VoteFromAbroad.org. Or get local ballot help at the Lake Chapala Society in Ajijic every Monday (September 9, 16, 23) from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Second, and very important, send your completed ballot back according to your state’s requirements. See more on this in the Guadalajara Reporter’s September 23 issue.

Finally, Pihl notes that September is the smart month for all U.S. and dual citizens to vote from Mexico, regardless of their party affiliation.
