Canada offers new opportunities to skilled foreign workers amid ‘chronic’ labor shortage

With employers across Canada desperately seeking to fill countless vacant positions, the government of Canada has recognized that immigration is a vital piece to solving this puzzle.

Recent changes to Canada’s application management system for permanent immigration will allow more Mexican citizens, plus those from other countries also looking to spread their wings, to be eligible for employment under a new process that welcomes skilled newcomers with work experience in priority jobs.

The new “category-based selection” process will target immigrants with a background in five key sectors: health care; science, technology, engineering and mathematics professions; trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors; transport; and agriculture and agri-food. Specifically, 82 occupations in the five fields are incorporated into the new system.
