Flash flood hits south shore village

A heavy downpour hitting the south shore of Lake Chapala early Monday, June 26 provoked a flash flood that swept through Villa Emiliano Zapata, a rural village located between the municipal seat of Tizapan el Alto and the Michoacan border.

A water channel fed by three converging arroyos jumped its banks after a fallen tree blocked the flow of runoff from the storm, causing mud and water damage to at least 120 homes.

Although many of the householders suffered considerable damage to their household furnishings and personal belongings, there were no reports of human injures.
Meanwhile, the lake regained two centimeters in elevation during the first 10 days of the summer rainy season, after registering a 1.4 meter loss over the dry months.
