Speeding drivers to be snapped on GDL-Chapala highway

Mobile speeds cameras are to be installed on the Chapala-Guadalajara highway near the Ixtlahuacan turnoff from this Friday, Jalisco Transportation Secreatary (SVT) Operations Director Felipe Prado Trejo announced this week.

The 40-kilometer highway has one of the highest accident rates in the state, Prado said.

The non-permanent cameras will be placed in the zone on Friday, October 5, he said, without indicating how long they would remain there.  The SVT plans to use speed cameras on other major roads in the state over the coming months, either with or without prior warnings.

Motorists snapped driving over the speed limit will receive their fine through the postal service. They will have ten days to pay the fine (464 pesos) with a 50-percent discount.

The Chapala-Guadalajara highway passes through the outskirts of Ixtlahuacan just before the sharp climb up the hill from whose summit Lake Chapala becomes visible.  The speed limit drops to 40 kilometers an hour around the Ixtlahuacan intersection, although few drivers pay much heed to it.

According to the SVT, speed cameras now in use on the Guadalajara Periferico (city beltway) are the major reason for a significant drop in the number of accidents and fatalities on this highway, considered the most dangerous in the state of Jalisco.
