Solar-powered boats to race on Lake Chapala

Small solar-powered boats will take to the waters of Lake Chapala on Saturday, October 27, in the lead up to Jalisco’s Global Green Forum 2012.

You can see the vessels in action between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the Chapala beach across from the Beergarden Restaurant.

This is the fourth year of competition for solar-powered boats organized by the Universidad Tecnologica de la Zona Metropolitana de Guadalajara (UTZMG).   Several other universities in the region have also confirmed their participation.

The Global Green Forum 2012 is organized by the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development and takes place in the Expo Guadalajara on October 30 and 31. The aim of the forum is to use sustainable technology to form solutions to problems facing the environment.

Among the guest speakers will be Dr. Peter Davey, senior lecturer in the School of Environment in Griffith, Australia with a talk entitled “Healthy Cities, Public Health.”

Prior to the forum, there will be an environmental photo contest, which opened October 15, with the winners chosen via social networks.

Entrance to the forum will cost 200 pesos for students, 300 for teachers and industrial partners, and 1,200 for the general public. For more information, visit  /www.theglobalgreenforum.com.
