Child laborers bring photo show to Ajijic

The Collective for the Rights of Children (CODENI) will return to Ajijic Saturday, November 24, to open a photography exhibit, “Daily Images 2012,” in the second floor café at the Ajijic Cultural Center on the Ajijic plaza.

The photographers are children and teenagers who sell chips, gum, toys and other items on the streets of central Guadalajara. They participate in the photography workshop sponsored by CODENI.

Survival for these kids appears to be becoming more difficult with  new orders from the mayor of Guadalajara – as reported in this newspaper – that will force unlicensed street vendors to sell their wares “in any of eight public plazas located in more distant parts of the municipality.” This will put the kids and their parents at a disadvantage in what are generally their most productive weeks before Christmas.

The photography workshop gives the children a way to express what they see, experience and feel in their daily lives. Students first study the basic techniques of photography and are given a camera to practice these skills by capturing images of their surroundings.

“Daily Images 2012” includes framed photos and unframed images that will be on display through Friday, December 7.

The photos are poignant, funny, intimate, jarring and beautiful and take us to a Mexico that most of us know only at a distance.

Framed photos will be for sale for 1,000 pesos each and unframed prints will cost 500 pesos. All proceeds go to ensure the future of the photo workshop.

The opening reception begins at 3 p.m.
