Chapala workshop introduces vets to QuickSpay method

A select group of veterinarians from Chapala and Guadalajara honed their skills in performing fast, safe sterilization surgery on domestic pets during a three-day training workshop conducted November 9 through 11 at Chapala’s DIF Family Development center.

Dr. Jose Luis Cruz was brought in from the nation’s capital to lead instruction in the QuickSpay method, with hands-on practice on about 80 cats and dogs of both genders.

The so-called key hole technique developed by California vet Marvin Mackie is recognized for its multiple advantages over conventional neutering procedures such as smaller incisions that allow for prompt healing, lower amounts of surgical materials and anesthesia, fast post-operative recuperation and reduced pain for the animal.

The clinic was organized by the lakeside animal protection group Operacion Amor, in cooperation with the Haghenbeck Foundation of Mexico City and the Chapala Municipal Government.

The new city administration backed the project by providing lodging and meals for the instructor and use of the DIF facility as the venue.

The local government has previously supported Operacion Amor in sponsoring three separate spay and neuter campaigns carried out over the past year in Chapala and Santa Cruz de la Soledad. The programs targeted pet owners of limited means who jumped at the opportunity to have their animals fixed free of charge or in exchange for a voluntary donation. As a result nearly 500 cats and dogs in the community have ceased producing offspring.

Mayor Joaquin Huerta’s wife Marisela Navarro and her sister Alejandra have pledged DIF’s collaboration in repeating the no-cost surgical programs twice a year.

Anyone interested in giving Operacion Amor a financial boost may deposit cash donations in Account 5027297 at the O&A investment house located at Centro Laguna, adjacent to the highway facing Wal-Mart.
