Chapala Mayor Joaquin Huerta pledged to reinstate the public referendum process that had become customary with every change of government since the 1990’s. In November the city council approved reforms to municipal government regulations that were required to reverse the system of direct designation by the chief executive implemented by the previous administration.
Appointees named by former mayor Jesus Cabrera have remained in charge of Delegacion offices since Huerta took office on October 1.Shortly before the Christmas holidays Huerta announced that the official guidelines for candidate registrations will be issued in the early weeks of January. Following a two-week campaign period, registered voters will go to the polls in towns where they reside. Candidates will be allowed to name representatives to witness the ballot count. New delegados will be sworn in once the results are confirmed.
