Photographer keeps winning plaudits for Chapala images

Mexican-American photographer Victor Hugo Casillas Romo capped a fantastic year when his image of Lake Chapala won third place in an international competition in December.

Having already won two seasonal categories in the British Wildlife and Wetlands Trust (WWT) competition, Casillas’ stunning shot of Lake Chapala was ranked third out of 25 worldwide finalists.

In total, Casillas won 18 prizes and had his work displayed in 43 exhibitions in Mexico and across the world in 2012. His strongest work documents the environment and human rights issues, the Guadalajara-based photographer told the Reporter last week.

Casillas, who teaches communication in Guadalajara’s Instituto de Ciencias, has a particular passion for Lake Chapala and has photographed it regularly. By highlighting the beauty of the lake, he hopes to persuade people to take greater action to protect it from pollution.
