Teen murder suspect in police custody

The Chapala teenager accused of fatally stabbing his older brother during a February 9 family dispute is now in the custody of juvenile justice authorities, facing prosecution for parricide.

The 16-year-old boy was captured last week when he returned home after hiding out in the in the wilderness outside town for nearly two weeks. He reportedly wearied of the lack of shelter and surviving on a diet of goat’s milk he obtained from wandering herds.

According to officials at the Chapala Ministerio Publico (District Attorney’s Office), the youngster admitted to killing his sibling, Eduardo Elvira Perez, 18, with a kitchen knife as the two were engaged in a violent argument over 20 pesos related to the loan of a boom box to another relative.

Adults convicted of parricide are subject to jail sentences of 20 to 35 years. As an under-age offender, the accused teen in this case probably faces a maximum of three years in Guadalajara’s juvenile detention and rehabilitation center (Tutelar).
