Fiesta Mexicana boosts kitty for Miramontes sculpture

A well-attended Fiesta Mexicana held June 15 at the Ajijic plaza pulled in around 20,000 pesos that will go towards the bronze casting of a work of art donated to Ajijic by renowned Mexican sculptor Miguel Miramontes.

The party was organized by Centro Cultural Ajijic director Efren Gonzalez, who has been collecting funds to complete the bronzing of Los Sobrevivientes (the survivors), a piece that will be put on permanent display at the center’s entrance. With 105,000 pesos already in the kitty prior to event, and an additional 10,000 received this week from a private donor, Gonzalez in now just 25,000 pesos shy of the full cost of the project.

The crowd dined on sumptuous Mexican fare and took in a first rate entertainment program  until a sudden cloudburst cut short the performance by the Son de Mexico ballet folklorico, bringing the party to an abrupt end. Gonzalez filled in between the acts with humorous banter as he raffled off assorted of door prizes and auctioned several of his own paintings.
