Lakesiders get in on soggy Independence celebrations

Despite getting caught smack in between tropical storms churning off Mexico’s eastern and western  coastlines, Fiestas Patrias festivities in the lakeside area were kept pretty much on schedule, drawing enthusiastic though smaller-than-normal crowds.

Umbrellas, overcoats and waterproof footwear were de riguer fashion accessories among hundreds of folks who braved intermittent showers to catch the September 15 Grito celebrations held on Sunday night. The same held true day for the spectators who rallied the following morning to watch the traditional Dia de Independencia parades, even though many absences from the ranks of marching school kids were more than apparent.

A downpour coming right at starting time stifled attendance at the Viva Mexico party held at the Lake Chapala Society, but did little to put a damper on the spirits of those who did show up to feast on the sumptuous Mexican style buffet and enjoy singing and dancing in the rain to tropical sounds by Banda Las Parritas.

Somewhat more favorable conditions are expected for the extended holiday calendar that includes special events planned this weekend in several north shore communities.

Activities coming up in San Antonio Tlayacapan start with the Fiestas Patrias beauty pageant Friday, September 20, 8:30 p.m. at the plaza. A globo paper balloon display is tentatively planned for Saturday, September 21, around 4 p.m., at the local soccer field, to be followed by a Grito celebration at the plaza from 8:30 p.m.  The Independence parade is set for Sunday, September 22, 4 p.m., with a greased pole contest and other games for kids and live musical entertainment scheduled afterwards at the plaza.

The program for San Juan Cosala includes a Noche Mexicana and Grito ceremony at the plaza on Saturday night from 9 p.m., and Sunday’s civic parade leaving from the plaza at 9 a.m.
