New British envoy to visit Chapala Oct. 20

Duncan Taylor, the recently installed British ambassador to Mexico, will be hosted at a reception in Chapala on Sunday, October 20, from 5:30-7:30 pm.

During the event, local British resident Ceri Dando will receive the British Empire Medal (BEM), awarded to him by Queen Elizabeth II in her birthday honors list earlier this year.

All British nationals, their spouses or partners living in the Lake Chapala and Guadalajara region are welcome to attend.

The reception takes place at the Chapala Inn, on the lakefront, at Paseo Ramon Corona 23.

Wine and refreshments will be served. A cover charge of 50 pesos is requested.

Taylor took over the top job at the British embassy in Mexico City in September, replacing Judith Macgregor. He joined the British foreign service in 1982 and has worked on a wide range of issues, including leading the Japan section and as head of the Consular Service. He has served as British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean and has also had postings in Havana, Budapest and New York. Before joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Taylor worked with Gulf Oil for two years. He has also spent a year on secondment with Rolls Royce, as director of Latin American Affairs. His last post was as governor of the Cayman Islands.

Dando, a lifelong hands-on community contributor, has worked tirelessly in favor of charitable endeavors since moving to Mexico in 1995. He took over the running of the Lakeside British Society in 2000.
