Bird fest welcomes Chapala’s winter wildlife

Timed to welcome flocks of migratory birds that are winging their way from Canada and the United States for the winter season, the fourth annual Festival de las Aves del Lago de Chapala will take place from Friday, November 22 through December 1, offering a variety of cultural and educational activities at different north shore venues.

The calendar of special events kicks off with an opening celebration at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (former railway station). The program includes short back-to-back conferences on the topics of illegal trafficking of wild birds, 5:30 p.m., and the roseate spoonbill, emblem of the festival, 6 p.m. Cocktails will be served following the ceremony.

Efren Gonzalez will host the Aves del Lago art show, opening Saturday, November 23, 5 p.m., at his Ajijic Gallery, Marcos Castellanos 7, a half block below the San Andres Church.

Activities on Sunday, November 23 get off to an early start with a bird watchers walk slated at the Cristiania Park, 8 to 10 a.m.  Environmental education workshops and cultural activities will be held at the Chapala Malecon from 4 to 8 p.m.
