Change of guard for Lerma-Chapala Council

Presiding at the 12th formal session of the Lerma-Chapala Basin Council held December 6 in Guadalajara, National Water Commission General Director David Korenfeld, Jalisco Governor Jorge Aristóteles Sandoval Díaz and his counterpart from Guanajuato, outgoing council president Miguel Márquez Márquez, handed over the reins of the entity to Jorge Jiménez Campos (far right).

Emerging from accords drawn up since the late 1980’s, the council is made up of stakeholders from five states that help shape water use and environmental policies for the vast and overexploited watershed. Jimenez Campos was elected to serve for the 2013-2015 term, coming to the post with experience as general coordinator of the State of Mexico’s Rio Lerma Commission. Jalisco’s chief of state called on him to promptly put into effect a strict regulatory code that will supersede the evolving interstate agreements and assure Lake Chapala’s conservation.
