Summer courses offered for kids on vacation

Under Mexico’s official school calendar, school kids will have about five weeks between July 15 and August 18 to enjoy a summer break from their studies.  Working parents and busy grandparents can choose from a variety Lakeside area vacation time programs to keep youngsters busy and entertained during the lapse.

Chapala’s Municipal Sports Comission (Comude) and Family Development Agency (DIF) have teamed up to schedule Cursos de Verano (summer courses) at ten locations throughout the municipality. The program kicks off July 21, operating Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Diverse activities for children aged 4 to 13 will include arts and crafts, music and dance, basic dessert-making and organized games along with basketball, volleyball, soccer and tag football.

For full details, contact the Comude office at the Municipal Coliseum, located next door to the soccer field at the north end of Avenida Madero, telephone 765-6501.

Classes in painting, music, theater, puppetry and literature are on the summer bill at the Centro Cultural de Ajijic, set on the north side of the town square. This program also rolls out on Monday, July 21. For information stop by the office Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or call 766-2373.

The Lake Chapala Society is sponsoring the second annual Children’s Art Camp, scheduled to run July 21-25. Run in cooperation with the Ajijic Society of the Arts and the Feria Maestros del Arte, the program offers free workshops in jewelry making, beading, papier mâche, watercolor and ceramics for children and teens, aged 3 to 18. Workshop products will be sold at the Art Open House on Saturday, July 26, with half of the ticket price going to the individual young artists and the remainder going into a kitty to support the LCS Children’s Art Program.
