Chapala throws huge holiday bash for local kids

A throng of more than 1,000 children and their parents showed up for the public Christmas party (posada) hosted by the Chapala government on Tuesday, December 16.

The event kicked off with an open-air screening of the hit Disney flick “Frozen,” with the crowd filling long rows of chairs jammed into the entire west lane of Avenida Madero from the main intersection to Calle Niños Héroes.

Each child received a bag of popcorn to munch on during the show, along with tickets to trade in afterwards for a hot dog, a soft drink and a goody bag filled with a handful of candy and a large plastic ball.

Immediately following the movie, Chapala Mayor Joaquín Huerta threw the switch on the sparkling holiday lighting display adorning the city hall building. The decorations include a shimmery curtain of white lights that illuminate the building’s façade after dark and a nativity scene made up of giant plastic figures arranged on the sidewalk that are colorful during daylight hours and glow from inside at night.

The lighting project was jointly sponsored by the Guadalajara and lakeside branches of the National Chamber of Commerce and Blachere Mexico, an outfit based in Puebla that specializes in mounting large scale, high-tech lighting displays all over the country.

Tuesday’s celebration was also supported by Cinemas del Lago, the Lake Chapala Society, Love in Action and Chapala’s DIF Family Development Agency.
