Chapala’s magical mystery project

The new Chapala municipal government appears to be going great guns on its first major public works project, under construction along the median strip at the south end of Avenida Madero.

The so-called “lineal park” located opposite the city hall building is being turned into a pedestrian zone, with vast cement slabs replacing former green areas.

While Mayor Javier Degollado’s press and urban planning offices have ignored requests from local reporters to provide detailed information, city hall insiders reveal that the project is modeled after Guadalajara’s Avenida Chapultepec, with the idea of creating a new venue for entertainment and civic events.

The mayor has made public statements suggesting the project is an integral part of his “Rescue to Transform” plan to get Chapala listed on the Pueblos Mágicos roster.
