Needlepushers on the move

The Needlepushers group has moved to its new location in the house recently purchased for expansion of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).

The group is now meeting on the front porch of the house and will move inside during the colder months.  The members are especially pleased with the space they have been given to store the yarn, fabric, trims and other materials they use to create the sweaters, dresses and vests they give to the needy children of the Lake Chapala area.

“We are very thankful to LCS for giving us a room inside the house where we can store things and not have to fight cockroaches, spiders and other invaders,” said Needlepusher Susy Wright. “Now we can access our yarn, fabric, trims and other materials and not get them and ourselves dirty from handling filthy bins.”

The group also continues moving ahead with its mission of creating special, one-of-a kind clothing for the children of the Lake Chapala area.  The first distribution of 115 handmade sweaters took place at the Rosaura Zapata kindergarten in Chapala Thursday, October 20.

The knitting and crocheting Needlepushers continue pushing their needles to produce more sweaters to distribute in the near future, boosted by the return of snowbird members. Sewing members have already sewn 122 dresses and 92 vests to distribute in the month prior to Holy Week in the spring. Their goal is to have at least 200 dresses and 200 vests ready by then.

Needlepushers, which was founded in 1962 by Neill James, depend on contributions of yarn, fabrics, trims, and other materials in addition to members’ dues and cash donations to acquire the materials with which they knit, crochet and sew their special creations.
