Chapala's proposed animal protection law goes under review

The draft of Chapala’s groundbreaking regulatory code on animal rights and protection was put up for public review this week, giving citizens and representatives of animal shelters, rescue groups and animal care professionals an opportunity to weigh in on the content and suggest changes based on real-life experiences in this community.

Throughout the morning of Wednesday, April 25, members of the Chapala City Council and around 15 interested parties gathered at the bandstand on the town plaza to read through the 34-page text and propose corrections for imprecise, contradictory or undesirable language.

Animal rights advocate and licensed attorney Mayra Ortiz highlighted around 20 articles that needed improvement. Local veterinarians are also scrutinizing the document and  may submit their opinions.

Revisions will be implemented by the end of May for final approval, publication and enactment of the Reglamento de Protección y Trato Digno para los Animales.
