Ajijic trash collection routes revamped

In an ongoing effort to clean up the town, Ajijic Administrator (Delegado) Chuni Medeles has announced the latest phase in revamping the local refuse collection scheme.

pg1cHe is issuing a plea for residents to collaborate in achieving the goal.

Medeles is intent on eradicating the common practice of dumping on street corners. He is in the process of posting signs at key points to put the public on notice that prohibition is now in effect. Two warnings will be issued in writing to individuals detected in violation of the norms before fines are imposed.

Earlier this month the delegado restructured the pick-up of “green” waste in the heart of the village, setting runs to retrieve garden refuse in neighborhoods south of the highway on Thursdays and Fridays and service in the northern quadrant on Saturdays.

The crew assigned to the town’s distinctive red garbage truck is now taking over daily pick-up of regular household trash in the entire central sector, freeing personnel from Chapala Aseo Publico sanitation department to cover outlying zones.

From Monday through Saturday, the red truck will follow a maze-like route spanning all streets situated between Pedro Moreno-Aquiles Serdan to the west and Nicolas Bravo-Galeana to the east from the lakefront to the highway, plus Angel Flores-Felipe Angeles above the highway from Juarez to Galeana.  The run starts from the Malecón at 7 a.m., to finish by 10 a.m.  Green waste collection will commence afterwards on designated days for corresponding zones.

Aseo Publico Director Juan Cuevas indicates that trash collection will continue on the immediate eastern, western and northern extremes of the village center, Monday through Saturday. Pick up in Villa Nova is set for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Runs in Rancho del Oro are scheduled for Tuesday  and Friday. La Canacinta and other points west as far as La Cristina are covered Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The target time frame for all these areas is 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Householders are asked to deposit trash at the doorstep first thing in the morning (or in accordance with usual hours) and refrain from putting it out after the truck passes by.   They are encouraged to utilize garbage cans and separate discarded plastics, cardboard and paper goods, and aluminum containers apt for recycling.

As a move to further discourage after-hours trash deposits, the delegado is also removing a number of wooden planks with hooks or pegs for hanging garbage bags that have been installed at various locations.  Although the devices appear to have been placed by foreign residents with the best of intentions, he regrets that they are counter productive to the aim of keeping the village looking tidy. Persons who put them in place are welcome to drop into the delegation office to retrieve their property.
