Chapala brings back Sincrónico contemporary art fest

Art, music, dance, literature and more are wrapped into six weeks of activities programmed for Sincrónico 2, Chapala’s second annual festival of contemporary arts.

pg9bThe festival starts on Saturday, August 12 and most of the events are open to the public free of charge.

Events scheduled for opening day begin with the opening of an exhibition of paintings and photographs from the Chapala Culture Department’s permanent collection, at the Centro Cultural San Antonio Tlayacapan, Calle Jesús García 4, a half-block south of the highway, starting 4 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia (CCAP), Avenida Madero at Hidalgo in Chapala, inaugurates an exhibit of paintings and sculptures, titled Sueños Rotos (Broken Dreams), by Antonio Loza Hecht, highlighting the festival’s core theme of migration.

A performance of flamenco fusion dance by Grupo Canela follows at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, at the Centro Cultural Ajijic, Knockout Poético, billed as “poetry in personal defense,” will be presented at 7 p.m. The format will mimic a boxing match.

pg9cThe program picks up again at CCAP on Tuesday, August 15, 7 p.m., with a roundtable discussion on migration as a determining factor in lakeside’s cultural and artistic development. Local artists, educators and other interested persons are welcome to participate in this Spanish-language dialogue.

Next up is a concert by the Jalisco State Chorus, Thursday, August 17, 7 p.m. at CCAP. The choir will perform a repertoire of Latin American tunes.

Sincrónico’s featured guest artist, Yen-Hua Lee, opens a show of paintings and installation art at CCAP on Friday, August 18, 6 p.m. The distinguished Taiwanese artist is bringing a number of her works from a highly acclaimed exhibition held in Tokyo last November. She will also lead an artist’s workshop during her stay in the area.

Later that evening, at 7:30 p.m., is the staging of Disección de Martin Giner, a Spanish-language black comedy revolving around a Polish anatomist, his mother and a living corpse on the run from the World War II invasion of German troops. Admission to the play is set at 100 pesos, reduced to 80 pesos for students and seniors.

Rounding out the first week of Sincrónico events is the opening of Los Colores de Guardagujas (The Colors of Needlekeepers), an exhibit of paintings and sculptures by Guadalajara artists Estebán Urbieta, Miguel Angel Martín del Campo and Karla de Lara, set for Saturday, August 19, 6 p.m., at the Centro Cultural González Gallo (former Chapala train station).

Also on August 18, 7:30 p.m., CCAP hosts a screening and discussion panel of the documentary “Soy Migrante,” combined with live rock music.
