Big bucks promised for Chapala highway rehab

Despite recent patchwork repairs, the section of the Chapala-Guadalajara highway running from Chapala to the Ocotlan-La Barca turnoff remains riddled with potholes and surface irregularities that aggravate and endanger motorists.

Relief is finally on the horizon, according to Jalisco Governor Aristóteles Sandoval.

During a November 17 visit to Ixtlahuacán del los Membrillos, the chief executive announced plans to sink 87 million pesos (US$4.6 million) into a definitive remedy for the treacherous state highway that runs roughly 20 kilometers from the outskirts of Chapala to the intersection often referred to as the Santa Rosa junction.

The project will involve a complete reconstruction of segments of the highway that are in the worst condition and conservation of parts that are in decent shape, explained Nezahualcóyotl Ornelas, head of the Jalisco Ministry for Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP),

Ornelas acknowledged that it has been more than a decade since the any work other than routine maintenance was carried out on the heavily traveled highway that runs through the outskirts of Ixtlahuacán del los Membrillos.

The official said costs will be covered by a 40-million-peso earmark in the state budget, with the remainder coming from a federal government trust fund for state infrastructure projects.

Work should commence once funding is released in February, with a timeline for completion before the start of the next rainy season. Happy motoring!
