Chapala highway rehab project suspended

After completing barely one quarter of the reconstruction of the 16-kilometer roadway linking the Guadalajara-Octolán highway to Chapala’s city limits, Jalisco’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP) and the federal Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT) suspended the rehabilitation project at the start of this month.

Initiated at the end of March, the first phase of the project consisted of leveling and renewing the asphalt surface and repainting markings along the four-lane divided stretch between the Santa Rosa overpass and the entrance to Buenavista. Potholes have also been filled in on the remaining, badly pitted 12-kilometer segment running through Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos and into Chapala.

Early this year SIOP chief Netzahualcóyotl Ornelas said  that the state agency had budgeted 20 million pesos for the project, with SCT lined up to sink in an additional 60 million. There has been no notice as to when work on the perilous road will be resumed.
