Runner-up challenges Chapala election outcome

Alejandro Aguirre of the National Action Party (PAN) is filing a series of appeals intended to overturn the result of Chapala’s mayoral race. He is citing a host of irregularities during the process.

pg2bThe first of three separate legal measures, presented Wednesday, July 11, challenges ballot counts registered at various polling stations. The second appeal, to be lodged before the District Election Council Friday, July 13, seeks a total vote recount.

The final recourse will call on the State Electoral Institute (IEPC) to reverse its declaration of the election’s validity and issuance of a certification of a majority  in favor of Moisés Anaya.

All three matters will eventually be channeled to Jalisco’s Electoral Tribunal for resolution within 40 days, falling in the first week of September.

Aguirre’s legal counsel refer to acts of violence occurring during the campaigns and assorted election day incidents – including the detection of missing blocks of ballots at some polls, temporary misplacement of sealed packages of completed ballots and multiple errors committed by volunteer poll keepers – as motives that have instilled widespread public mistrust in an election supposedly ruled by fundamental democratic principles.
