Ajijic traffic light replaced at last

Nearly three months after a traffic light in Ajijic bit the dust in car crash, the essential device has finally been replaced.

pg1aThe signal regulating eastbound traffic at the corner of the highway and Calle Galeana has been missing since June 25 when it was demolished in a rollover accident, putting motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at risk. Municipal authorities let the situation ride with claims that the driver who caused the damage was legally responsible for replacing the light and the government was unable to cough up funds to do the repairs.

In mid-July, Chapala Transito Director Alejandro Borrayo pledged to move a signal from another location to the treacherous intersection, but as the weeks dragged on, outraged citizens began posting complaints on social media.

Last week, Borrayo managed to rustle up enough spare parts for a temporary fix.

On Saturday, September 8, he dispatched a crew to carry out maintenance on all Ajijic’s traffic lights. One of the tasks was to hang a provisional signal at the crash site, ingeniously wiring it up on the business sign of a lawyer’s office situated there.

Early this week Jalisco’s Ministry of Mobility (SeMov) sent out personnel from its traffic light division to assess the situation.  The workmen returned on Wednesday afternoon to install a proper pole and brand new signal with double red lights.
