How to catch the bus to Guadalajara

Autotransportes Guadalajara-Chapala, the bus company that transports passengers between lakeside and the state capital, recently relocated its Ajijic terminal to new digs situated about a half-block east of Calle Colón.

pg11aThe new substation offers larger and tidier quarters with ample seating for customers, along with a modern ticket counter.  A long yellow line painted along the outdoor curb marks the exclusive passenger boarding area.

First class (Chapala Plus) direct runs to Guadalajara via the Libramiento bypass, originating in Jocotepec. It departs from the Ajijic station every hour between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.  An alternate route follows the highway to Chapala’s main terminal and on to the city, with passenger pick-up every 20-30 minutes from 5:30 a.m.

The current fare for both routes to Guadalajara is 56 pesos, ending at the city’s downtown Viejo Central Camionero (close to the Agua Azul Park, and a 15- to 20-minute walk to the centro historico). Rides to bus stops on the Libramiento cost seven pesos, while the full fare to Chapala is nine pesos.

Departures from the Chapala terminal to Guadalajara are scheduled every half hour between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. The ticket price is 55 pesos.

Return trips from Guadalajara to Chapala, Ajijic and Jocotepec leave every 30 minutes between 7 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. The “directo” to Ajijic departs every 60 minutes on the hour.
