Homeboy aces design for San Antonio identity letters

Native son Juan Antonio Aguayo de la Cruz has been named the winner of a contest to design a name sign for San Antonio Tlayacapan.

pg11aThe decision was announced Tuesday, February 25 by acting Delegado Ramiro Rentería Silva.

Aguayo, 25, is a professional graphic designer who works in a family printing business located on the highway opposite Chula Vista. His only prize will be having his signature included in the 20-letter sign and taking pride in creating a handsome work of art that identifies his pueblo.

Rentería said that four contest entries were rejected outright for not conforming to specifications in the competition rules, leaving only two finalists. The jury decided Aguayo‘s design best represented the town‘s history, traditions and attributes in an esthetically pleasing manner.

Aguayo chose to enlarge the first and last letters of the town’s full name to frame the sign.  He depicted “SAN” in a sky blue hue to represent the lake and mountains. “ANTONIO” appears in forest green, signifying the natural landscape.  He picked hot pink to color “TLAYACAPAN” to highlight the town‘s original Náhuatl moniker. Each letter is decorated with a symbolic motif relating to the pueblo’s architecture, culture, customs and traditions.

The name sign will be made out of steel, measuring 5.9 meters in length. It will be embedded on a solid base built in the green area near the southwest corner of the village plaza. Before that, however, Rentería will have to arrange financing for the project at an estimated cost of 172,000 pesos. He is counting on the municipal government to assist in applying for funds from the Fidetur trust fund containing hospitality taxes collected from the local hotel industry.

Following the announcement of the contest results, the delegado issued an open invitation for the public to visit San Antonio at the second annual Vegan Festival, set for Saturday, March 9, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the plaza. Suppliers from Guadalajara and Mexico City will be there to exhibit an assortment of commercial products and offer tastings of varied vegan dishes.
