Recycling bins installed in Ajijic

In a move to encourage greater participation in Ajijic’s recycling program, the citizens committee running the pilot project has started installing collection bins at convenient locations around the village.

So far 17 of the metal containers have been paid for by local residents and businesses. Three are already installed along the street at the Malecón, and two others at the central plaza. Other locations are Calle Guadalupe Victoria at Privada Guadalupe Vitoria, 16 de Septiembre at Morelos, Independencia at 5 de Mayo, Independencia at 5 de Febrero, Carretera at Aqules Serdán and Carretera at Alvaro Obregón. Others will be placed at Carretera and Cinco de Febrero, Carretera and Tempisque, Ocampo at Flores Magón, Zaragoza at Francisco Villa and two more spots still undetermined.

pg13The cost for each bin runs to 2,000 pesos. This includes a graphic sign showing the type of materials that are apt for recycling and those that are not appropriate and a plaque naming the donors. Acceptable items include plastic bottles labeled with the recycling numbers 1, 2 or 5, and cardboard, preferably flattened out and untainted with grease or food residues. It is best to drop in loose materials to avoid sorting out single-use plastic trash bags. Glass and metal objects are not being accepted at present.

The bins are not intended for depositing mixed wastes that are picked up by the company in charge of local garbage collection.

Residents living in the center of town may also leave recyclables at the doorstep for weekly collection by the red truck operated by Delegación Ajijic personnel. The Monday route covers the east side of town between calles Revolución and Colón. Wednesday runs start at Colón, going west up to Flores Magón. Friday pickup follows Ocampo westward to La Canacinta. A map is posted on the Limpiemos Ajijic Facebook page. Collections in neighborhoods and subdivisions situated north of the highway may be scheduled by arrangement with the Delegacón office.
