Lend a hand to Ajijic recycling program

Tom Thompson, head of the Ajijic Citizen Recycling Committee, has issued a call to action for Saturday, April 6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., to sort and store accumulated materials at the group’s collection center located on the western outskirts of Ajijic.

Last week, the group was notified that space in the Centro de Acopio warehouse had to be cleared out to house Mexican Army troops over the Easter holidays. Work was well under way when the local government let Thompson know that the barracks were being set up elsewhere.

Nonetheless, the committee decided to forge ahead in reorganizing the center’s two storage rooms and exterior areas for more efficient management. The sale of discarded materials collected to date has generated enough money to hire two workers to handle daily tasks for two months, Thompson explains. But the group needs extra hands to quickly make the collection center more functional to receive, classify and farm out recyclable items.

The committee is asking for hands-on volunteers, supporters willing to send domestic employees to the site or to supply the work crew with fruit, sandwiches, water and other food and drink to fuel their labors in the April 6 cleanup effort.
